History of the Name
By Dietrich Jacobshagen based on information from Professor Dr. Eduard Jacobshagen
According to an undocumented report, the Jacobshagen's were a noble family, having holdings in Germany: in The Kurmark, in Sachsen-Gotha, Hessen-Kassel and Braunschweig. A Jacob Siegesmund Jacobshagen lived around the year 1086.
It is possible, that the noble clan of the Jacobshagen's, as time passed by, continued just as able and hearty citizen. Another posibility is, we took our name from three locations in Germany.
- "Civitas Jacobshagen" , east of the Oder river (now polish)
- The village Jakobshagen, north of Berlin
- The "Wilderness of Jacobshagen", ten km. south of Herzberg
The end syllable Hagen is very old. It was given to villages, which were founded on de-forested areas.
"Hagen" was also used to identify the oldest son of the family, who would inherit the de-forested farm; for example: "Jacob of the Hagen".
As you see, the origin of our name is shrouded in mystery. Our name goes far back in history; but we are here to stay and continue in the USA and in Germany.
